Last fact-checked: October 21, 2026. Our conclusions rest on documented evidence, including Goldco’s published terms, BBB and Trustpilot records, court filings, and IRS.gov, not on undocumented personal experience. We did not open an account or receive a written quote from Goldco, and here is how this review was researched. Fees, ratings, and promotions change, so confirm them before you move money.
Our verdict: Goldco (Goldco Direct LLC, also known as Goldco Precious Metals) is one of the more established gold IRA companies and a solid fit for a specific buyer: someone moving $25,000 or more from an IRA, 401(k), TSP, or 403(b) who wants a representative to handle the rollover from the first form to the vault confirmation.
What Goldco does well. It runs a guided, rep-led rollover, holds an A+ BBB rating with accreditation since 2011, and has thousands of mostly positive reviews, including a 4.82 out of 5 average from 1,714 BBB reviewers. It sells IRA-eligible gold and silver, including standard 1 oz coins and bars, publishes estimates for its custodian and storage fees ($275 to $325 in year one, then about $225 to $275 a year), and offers to buy back metals it sold at any time.
What to watch. Goldco does not publish its premiums, and its catalog leans toward quarter-ounce specialty coins that usually cost more per ounce. Its “highest price” buyback guarantee applies only after three years, its bonus silver requires $50,000 or more in Goldco premium coins, and its BBB complaints center on statement values and slow liquidations. Goldco has also settled two class actions over marketing text messages, with no court finding of wrongdoing. None of this rules Goldco out. It is the reason to get every price in writing, and this review shows you how.

Why Consider Goldco?
If you have already decided a gold IRA belongs in your plan, the real question is which company to trust with the rollover. These are the evidence-based reasons Goldco makes many shortlists.
- A guided rollover from start to finish. Goldco pairs you with a representative who coordinates with your custodian and your old plan, so you are not chasing paperwork. Goldco says the transfer step itself usually takes from a couple of days to two weeks.
- An established, accountable company. Goldco has an A+ BBB rating with accreditation since 2011, a 4.82 out of 5 BBB review average, 4.7 on ConsumerAffairs, and 4.4 on Trustpilot. It answered all 72 BBB complaints filed in the past three years, and we found no government enforcement actions against it.
- A moderate entry point. Goldco’s general IRA minimum is $25,000, half of Augusta Precious Metals’ $50,000.
- Gold and silver for IRAs and home delivery. Standard choices include 1 oz American Gold Eagles, Buffalos, and Maple Leafs, gold bars, American Silver Eagles, and silver bars, alongside a large lineup of specialty coins. Goldco does not currently offer platinum or palladium.
- Published fees and a buyback commitment. Goldco estimates $275 to $325 in custodian and storage fees in year one, and it says it will buy back metals it sold at any time.
What the next steps look like. Goldco’s process is a series of small decisions, and you can stop at any of them:
- Request the free kit and take the specialist’s call.
- Ask for a written quote: the price per ounce and premium for each product, the custodian’s fee schedule, and today’s buyback bid.
- Compare that quote with at least one other company.
- If you go ahead, complete the custodian’s account application and transfer paperwork.
- Approve your order, then check the depository confirmation against it.
Those strengths come with trade-offs, covered in detail below: premiums Goldco does not publish, a buyback guarantee with a three-year condition, and a complaint record worth reading before you call.
Is Goldco Right for Your Rollover?
How well Goldco fits depends mostly on how much you are moving. Flat account fees shrink as a share of a larger account, and the bonus silver tiers only start at $50,000. Here is how the picture changes, using Goldco’s published fee estimates and promotion terms as of October 2026.
| Amount You Are Moving | How Goldco Fits | Bonus Silver | What to Focus On |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $25,000 | Below Goldco’s general IRA minimum. Year-one account fees would also be more than 1.1% of the balance. | Not available | Look at lower-minimum providers such as American Hartford Gold ($10,000 IRA minimum) or Birch Gold Group ($5,000 minimum), per their own websites. |
| $25,000 to $49,999 | Meets the minimum. Year-one fees run about 0.55% to 1.30% of the balance, then 0.45% to 1.10% a year. | Not available; the offer starts at $50,000 in Goldco premium coins | Keep premiums low. Ask for 1 oz bullion coins or bars, and compare the quote with one other company. |
| $50,000 to $99,999 | A good fit on fees, at about 0.28% to 0.65% of the balance in year one. Augusta’s $50,000 minimum also comes into play here (see our Goldco vs Augusta comparison). | Up to 5% back in silver, only on qualified orders of $50,000 or more in Goldco premium coins | Weigh the bonus against the extra premium on qualifying coins. In our hypothetical math, a 5% bonus offsets only about 5 percentage points of extra premium. |
| $100,000 or more | Account fees become a small share, about 0.33% or less in year one. | 10% back in silver on qualified orders of $100,000 or more in Goldco premium coins | At this size, the premium is the decision. Get written per-product premiums and buyback bids, and compare at least two companies. In our hypothetical math, the 10% bonus offsets about 10 percentage points of extra premium. |
Two checks apply at every amount. If the buyback guarantee matters to you, plan on holding for at least three years, because that is when its highest-price promise starts. And keep money you may need soon out of a metals IRA, since selling and withdrawing takes time and can trigger taxes.
Bonus eligibility is set by Goldco’s terms, not by the size of your rollover. Based on the published wording, only purchases of Goldco premium coins count toward the thresholds, so a $60,000 rollover split between bullion and premium coins may not qualify. Confirm eligibility in writing before you approve an order.
Who Goldco Is Best For
Choose Goldco if:
- Your rollover falls in one of the qualifying ranges in the table above
- You want a representative to handle the custodian paperwork
- You are comfortable asking for prices in writing and pushing back on product recommendations
- You want strong overall review scores and a long track record
- You plan to hold for several years
- You plan to compare Goldco’s written quote with at least one other company
Who Should Look Elsewhere
- You are below the $25,000 minimum (the table above lists alternatives)
- You want the absolute lowest markup on plain 1 oz bullion
- You prefer a fully online process with no phone calls
- You may need to sell within a few years or need fast access to cash
- You want platinum or palladium in your IRA
If the first list sounds like you, the useful next step is a conversation about your specific rollover: which account you are moving, how much, and what you want to own. Ask for the quote in writing.
Talk to a Goldco Specialist About Your Rollover
What Happens After You Request Goldco’s Free Kit?
If Goldco is on your shortlist, the free kit is a practical first step. You get Goldco’s educational material on how a gold IRA works, plus the chance to speak with a Goldco specialist about your rollover options: which account you would move, how the transfer works, and which metals are eligible. It is also the moment to request current fees and product pricing in writing, so you can compare Goldco with another company using real numbers. Requesting the kit does not obligate you to open or fund an IRA.
Requesting it does mean agreeing to marketing contact, so it helps to know exactly what you are signing up for. Here is what we found on the Goldco kit request page we reviewed in October 2026. Landing pages vary, so read the form on the page you use.

What’s in the Goldco Gold and Silver Kit
Goldco described the kit as a printed guide plus audio and video material, shipped free by two-day FedEx. It explains how a gold IRA works and why some retirees move part of their savings into metals. Based on Goldco’s description and what these kits typically cover, expect material on:
- How a self directed IRA works
- What metals qualify for retirement accounts
- Common mistakes with old 401k plans
- The difference between home storage and depository storage
- Goldco’s view of the benefits and risks of physical gold and silver
It is a marketing piece, so read it as Goldco’s case for metals rather than a neutral guide. If you have already researched gold IRAs, the kit matters less than the conversation that comes with it.
What You Submit
The form asks for your first and last name, phone number, and email address. Account numbers and your Social Security number are not needed until you decide to open an account with the custodian.
What Follow-Up to Expect
- Marketing contact you agree to. Submitting the form authorizes Goldco and companies acting for it to contact you by phone, text, prerecorded message, ringless voicemail, automated call, and email. Consent is not required to make a purchase.
- Follow-up from a specialist. Expect Goldco to reach out to discuss your goals and accounts. One June 2026 BBB complainant described repeated calls from several numbers after requesting only a brochure, and Goldco has settled two class actions over marketing texts, so plan for persistent follow-up.
- Control over contact. Reply STOP to texts, tell the rep how and when you want to be contacted, and ask to be placed on Goldco’s internal do-not-call list if you decide against it.
- No account until you act. Requesting the kit does not open an IRA or start a transfer. That happens only when you complete the custodian’s application and transfer paperwork, and metals are bought only when you approve an order.
What to Ask Before You Open an Account
The call is where you turn Goldco’s estimates into real numbers. Before you agree to anything, ask for these in writing:
- The price per ounce and percentage premium over spot for each product on the proposed order
- Today’s buyback bid for each of those products
- The custodian’s name and current fee schedule, and which depository will hold your metals
- Whether your order qualifies for bonus silver, and which coins that requires
- How a sale works before and after the three-year mark
The full question checklist and our notes on what to expect on the first call cover the rest. For a broader look at whether kits like this are worth requesting, see our guide to free gold IRA kits.
Ready to take the first step? Request the free kit, review the material, and bring the questions above to your call with a Goldco specialist. Requesting it does not commit you to opening or funding an IRA:

Why We Wrote This Goldco Review
A gold IRA company can have a polished website and still leave you with a costly surprise, because the details that matter are rarely on the homepage. So this review is built around one rule: judge a gold IRA company by what it will put in writing. That means published fee schedules, the fine print on promotions and buyback guarantees, the complaint record, and the court record. You can run the same test yourself by asking for answers by email and comparing them with what you heard on the phone.
Goldco holds up on some of those tests and comes up short on others. The sections below lay out both, in plain English.
How This Goldco Review Was Researched
We rechecked this review on October 21, 2026. Here is what that involved and where its limits are.
- Goldco’s own published terms. We reviewed Goldco’s fee guide, gold IRA FAQ, storage page, product catalog, kit request page, and the fine print on its buyback guarantee and free silver offer.
- Complaint and review records. We read Goldco’s BBB complaint history (72 complaints over three years), its BBB, Trustpilot, ConsumerAffairs, and Business Consumer Alliance profiles, and the company’s public responses.
- Court records. We reviewed the federal court opinion in Goldco’s Alabama case against Warren Wilson, the official notice and settlement website for Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC, and a court filing in Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC.
- IRS and regulator guidance. Rollover, required minimum distribution, contribution limit, and precious metals rules come from IRS.gov and the tax code. Consumer warnings come from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
- Custody and storage. We checked Delaware Depository’s published insurance, audit, and storage details.
- Competitors. Figures for Augusta Precious Metals, American Hartford Gold, and Birch Gold Group come from those companies’ own websites.
Limits of this review. For this update we did not open a Goldco account, buy metals, or receive a written price quote, and Goldco does not publish its product premiums. That means we cannot tell you exactly what Goldco will charge for a specific coin. Examples on this page that use premium percentages are hypothetical and labeled that way. Customer complaints are allegations that the BBB and review sites do not verify, and we present them alongside Goldco’s responses.

Goldco Fees and Minimums: What a Goldco IRA Actually Costs
The short version: Goldco estimates $275 to $325 in custodian and storage fees in year one and about $225 to $275 a year after that. Those fees are not the biggest cost. The premium you pay over melt value on each coin matters more, and Goldco quotes it by phone, so get it in writing for every product.
Goldco does not charge these annual account fees directly.
Every gold IRA has to be held by a custodian, which is a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee, and the metal itself sits at a depository. These third parties set their own fees for setup, administration, and storage. Goldco helps you open the account and coordinates the paperwork, and the yearly account fees go to the custodian and the storage provider. Goldco is the dealer, so its revenue comes from the price it charges for the metals.
First Year Estimated Fees
$275 to $325 total (Goldco’s published estimate)
- $50 one-time setup fee
- $125 annual account administration fee
- $100 (non-segregated) to $150 (segregated) annual storage fee
Ongoing Annual Fee: about $225 to $275, depending on the storage type you choose
Source: Goldco’s gold IRA cost guide, last updated by Goldco in February 2025. One caution: Goldco’s own gold IRA FAQ page lists a lower administration fee of about $80 and roughly $200 a year in total. The custodian, not Goldco, sets the actual fee, so ask for the custodian’s current fee schedule in writing.
Gold IRA Custodian and Storage Fees (Not Charged by Goldco)
| Fee Type | Amount |
|---|---|
| Account Setup | $50, one time |
| Annual Admin Fee | $125 |
| Annual Storage Fee | $100 non-segregated, $150 segregated |
| Total First Year | $275 to $325 |
| Annual Ongoing | $225 to $275 |
| Minimum for IRA | $25,000 |
| Minimum for Cash Order | Not published; commonly reported as about $10,000 |
The Costs Goldco’s Fee Table Leaves Out
The custodian and storage fees are fixed and easy to compare. The costs below are not, and on a typical rollover they add up to far more.
- Dealer premium (markup). The amount you pay above the metal’s melt value, also called the spot price. Goldco does not publish its premiums. They vary by product and are usually highest on fractional, limited-edition, and proof coins.
- Bid/ask spread. The gap between what a dealer charges when you buy and what it pays when you sell. The CFTC tells buyers to ask about the spread before purchasing because it varies widely between dealers and products.
- Liquidation costs. Goldco advertises no fees on liquidation when it buys metals back, but the price it bids is what determines your proceeds. Selling to another dealer can mean a lower bid on coins that are less widely traded.
- Distribution costs. Taking metal out of a traditional IRA, in cash or in kind, is generally taxable income and may trigger a 10% additional tax before age 59½. Custodians may also charge distribution or shipping fees.
Hypothetical: What Fixed Fees Mean at Different Account Sizes
Because the account fees are flat, they weigh much more heavily on a small account. Goldco makes the same point in its own fee guide. Using Goldco’s published estimates:
| Account Size | First-Year Fees ($275 to $325) as % of Account | Ongoing Fees ($225 to $275) as % of Account |
|---|---|---|
| $25,000 | 1.10% to 1.30% | 0.90% to 1.10% |
| $50,000 | 0.55% to 0.65% | 0.45% to 0.55% |
| $100,000 | 0.28% to 0.33% | 0.23% to 0.28% |
| $250,000 | 0.11% to 0.13% | 0.09% to 0.11% |
This is one reason the $25,000 minimum exists. Below that level, account fees alone would take a noticeable bite every year from an asset that pays no interest or dividends.
Hypothetical: How the Premium Shapes Your Break-Even
The premium matters more than any annual fee because you pay it on day one. The table below uses a hypothetical $50,000 rollover. The premium levels are illustrations, not Goldco’s actual prices.
| Premium Over Melt Value | Melt Value You Own on Day One | Gap on Day One | Metal Price Rise Needed to Get $50,000 Back if Sold at Melt Value | Rise Needed if Sold at 5% Below Melt Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | $47,619 | $2,381 | 5.0% | 10.5% |
| 15% | $43,478 | $6,522 | 15.0% | 21.1% |
| 30% | $38,462 | $11,538 | 30.0% | 36.8% |
| 50% | $33,333 | $16,667 | 50.0% | 57.9% |
These break-even figures leave out account fees, which push them higher. They also explain one of the most common Goldco complaints covered below: a custodian statement that shows far less than you paid. Goldco’s own responses to BBB complaints say statements show the spot value of the metal, so the premium is visible from the first statement.
Goldco Minimum Investment and Pricing Transparency
The minimums come directly from Goldco, not from the custodian or storage partners.
- IRA Minimum: $25,000. Goldco says it generally requires this amount to open a precious metals IRA, pointing to how flat fees affect smaller accounts.
- Cash Purchase Minimum: Goldco’s website does not publish one. Third-party reviews commonly cite about $10,000, so confirm the current figure if you are planning a smaller direct purchase.
Like every precious metals dealer, Goldco charges a premium above spot price. No dealer sells at spot. The real questions are how large the premium is and whether you see it before you pay. Goldco quotes prices by phone rather than publishing them online, so the burden is on you to ask for the spot price, your price per ounce, and the markup percentage in writing for every product on your order. Several complaints described below say that information was not clear until after the purchase.
The quickest way to turn these estimates into real numbers is a written quote for your exact amount: the custodian and its fee schedule, your storage type, and the premium on each product. See how a Goldco IRA would work for you
Is Goldco Legit or a Scam?
Short answer. Goldco is a legitimate company, not a scam. It is a BBB-accredited dealer with an A+ rating and a long operating history, and customers’ IRA metals are held by third-party custodians and depositories rather than by Goldco. In the records we checked, we found no government enforcement action against the company.
“Not a scam” is a low bar, though. A legitimate dealer can still sell you coins at a premium that takes years of price gains to recover. Most people searching “Goldco scam” are really asking two better questions: is the price fair, and will I be able to get my money out? The sections on fees, complaints, and the buyback answer those.
What Makes Goldco Legit
- Operating for well over a decade (Goldco says it was founded in 2006, and the BBB has accredited it since 2011)
- A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau
- Thousands of public reviews across BBB, Trustpilot, and ConsumerAffairs
- IRA metals are held through a custodian (a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee) at a third-party depository, as the law requires
- Goldco does not hold your IRA metals itself, and depositories such as Delaware Depository carry their own insurance
- A published buyback program, with conditions explained below
- Responds publicly to BBB complaints, and Trustpilot shows a 100% reply rate to negative reviews
None of this means Goldco is perfect. No gold IRA company is. The signs of a functioning, accountable business are clearly there, along with a complaint record and two class-action settlements you should understand before you sign anything.
What “Legit” Does Not Tell You
- It does not mean the price is fair. A BBB rating reflects how a business handles complaints, not what it charges.
- The representative is not your fiduciary. The CFTC warns that precious metals salespeople generally are not required to act in your best interest and are often not qualified to give investment advice. Goldco states on its product pages that it is not a licensed financial advisor.
- It does not make gold safe. Goldco’s own disclaimer notes that metal prices can fall and that you may sell for less than you paid.
For the warning signs that do point to a bad actor, see our guide to common gold IRA scams and how to avoid them.
Goldco Reviews and Ratings: BBB, Trustpilot, and More
Goldco’s review scores are strong across the major platforms. Here is what each one showed when we checked on October 20 and 21, 2026.
| Platform | Rating |
|---|---|
| BBB | A+ rating; 4.82 out of 5 from 1,714 customer reviews |
| Trustpilot | 4.4 out of 5 from 1,787 reviews (89% five-star, 3% one-star) |
| Google Reviews | Not rechecked for this update |
| Consumer Affairs | 4.7 out of 5 from 1,883 reviews (weighted toward the last 24 months) |
| Business Consumer Alliance | AAA (3 reviews; 3 closed complaints in the past three years) |
Thousands of reviews across several independent platforms tell you a company has been tested in public over time. Not every review is glowing, but the overall picture is steady. Keep two caveats in mind: review scores measure the buying experience far more than investment results, and Trustpilot says it does not fact-check the reviews it hosts.
ConsumerAffairs also discloses that companies can pay to be authorized on its site, and one review on Goldco’s page is marked as featured by Goldco. Neither is a red flag on its own. Both are reasons to read the low-rated reviews rather than stop at the average.
Goldco Complaints: What the BBB Record and Low-Rated Reviews Show

The short version: Goldco’s complaint record is real but specific. The complaints we read cluster around a few patterns: premiums customers say they did not understand, statements that show less than they paid, and slow responses when they tried to sell. Knowing those patterns tells you exactly what to get in writing before you fund an account.
Goldco has thousands of strong reviews, but like any large financial company, it also has 1-star reviews and formal complaints. As of October 21, 2026, the BBB lists 72 complaints against Goldco in the past three years, 36 of them filed in the past 12 months. Goldco responded to all 72. The BBB marks 13 as resolved and 59 as answered, which generally means Goldco replied but the customer did not confirm the problem was resolved.
| BBB Complaint Type (Past Three Years) | Count |
|---|---|
| Service or repair issues | 21 |
| Product issues | 19 |
| Sales and advertising issues | 16 |
| Billing issues | 9 |
| Customer service issues | 5 |
| Delivery issues | 1 |
| Order issues | 1 |
Complaint counts need context. Goldco is a large dealer, and the BBB does not verify what complainants say. For comparison, Augusta Precious Metals, a smaller company by review volume, showed 1 BBB complaint over the same three-year window when we checked. When you read Goldco’s complaints and low-rated reviews closely, the same themes repeat, and they are worth knowing before you pick up the phone.
1. High Premiums and Value Shock
The most serious complaints are about price. Several BBB complaints describe clients later realizing they paid high premiums over spot, especially on specialty coins, so the account was worth far less on paper than the amount they rolled over. In a March 2026 BBB complaint, a senior customer alleged receiving Tuvalu coins instead of the American Eagles they expected, at roughly a 100% markup. In an April 2026 complaint, a customer alleged that a 2022 purchase of about $55,000 bought metal worth about $21,000. Older ConsumerAffairs reviews from 2022 make similar points: one alleges prices far above spot, and another calls the quarter-ounce Phoenix coins overpriced. Some forum posts raise the same concern, but those are anecdotal.
Goldco disputes these characterizations. In the April 2026 case, Goldco said statements show spot value rather than the price paid, and the customer later told the BBB that a resolution offered by email was satisfactory. In the March 2026 case, Goldco said the customer chose to sell at a price above the original purchase amount.
Sources: Better Business Bureau, ConsumerAffairs, Reddit (anecdotal; we could not access this thread to recheck it), and the current BBB complaint list.
What this means for you. Premiums are real in this industry, especially on specialty coins. Before you send money, ask for a simple written comparison:
- spot price today
- your total price per ounce for each product
- the percentage markup over spot
- the realistic buyback range they expect for that exact product
If you mainly want bullion close to spot, such as 1 oz American Gold Eagles, Buffalos, Maple Leafs, or bars, say that clearly at the start and repeat it in writing.
2. Confusion About Account Statements and Value
This pattern shows up repeatedly in Goldco’s 2026 BBB file. In one April 2026 complaint, a customer said metals bought for about $23,000 in November 2025 showed up on a December statement at about $13,700. Goldco’s response, repeated across several complaints, is that custodian statements show the spot or melt value of the metal, not the negotiated purchase price, which is part of why the account can look lower at first. Source: Better Business Bureau.
Goldco’s explanation is accurate as far as it goes. It is also the premium showing up in black and white. If a statement shows about 60% of what you paid, as in that complaint, the metal price would have to rise by about two-thirds before you are back to even, before fees.
What this means for you. The time to understand the gap between spot value and your dealer price is before you fund the account. Ask for a sample statement, ask where spot value appears, and keep important explanations in writing.
3. Premium Products Instead of Simple Bullion
Some complaints describe being guided into premium or proprietary coins when the customer thought they were buying simple bullion. These complainants say the coins later turned out to be harder to resell and were worth only melt value to other dealers. Recent Trustpilot reviews include one alleging steering toward proprietary coins and another saying the reviewer was offered collector coins after asking for bullion. Source: Better Business Bureau.
Goldco’s catalog helps explain the pattern. When we reviewed its gold product page, 20 of the 25 gold products listed were quarter-ounce coins, most of them themed or limited-edition designs. Fractional and limited-edition coins usually cost more per ounce than 1 oz bullion coins or bars. Goldco’s free silver bonus also applies only to purchases of its premium coins, which creates an incentive to lean toward those products.
What this means for you. Sales reps at any metals company can lean toward higher-margin products. That is not unique to Goldco. If you only want widely recognized bullion, state it clearly at the start of the call and repeat it if the conversation drifts. The CFTC specifically warns that numismatic and semi-numismatic coins often carry premiums that may not hold their value.
4. Delays and Liquidation Stress
A number of BBB complaints mention frustration when people try to get money out. In 2026 complaints, customers described liquidation requests that dragged on for months, calls that went to voicemail, document uploads that failed, and silver withdrawal requests that went unanswered while prices moved. Recent Trustpilot reviews describe similar trouble reaching representatives. Source: Better Business Bureau.
Goldco’s responses in those cases point to missing paperwork from the customer, unreturned callbacks, industry-wide call volume, and the time it takes to retrieve and verify physical metal. Some of those explanations may be fair. The pattern still deserves attention because it shows up at the moment customers most need a quick response.
What this means for you. Metals inside an IRA are not same-day liquidity like stocks. Before you buy, ask Goldco to outline, in writing, the steps to liquidate, who you call first, the typical time frame, and what could slow it down. If you need fast cash access, a physical metals IRA is probably not the right vehicle for that portion of your savings.
5. Small Balances and Vulnerable Clients
Some complaints come from people with smaller balances or from family members helping an elderly or ill relative. A few describe feeling rushed or disappointed by how much of the rollover was consumed by markups. In an August 2026 complaint, the child of a deceased account holder said calls about the account went unreturned, and Goldco replied that the person was not a customer or an authorized party on the account. Source: Better Business Bureau.
What this means for you. If you are helping a parent or older relative, join the call. Ask the rep to slow down. Get the important parts in email. Never let a vulnerable person make a large purchase alone, especially while grieving or medicated. That rule applies to any metals firm, not just Goldco. It also helps to name beneficiaries and make sure a family member knows which custodian holds the account, so heirs are not left waiting for authorization.
6. Repeated Sales Calls and Texts
A June 2026 BBB complaint describes requesting only a brochure and then receiving repeated calls from several numbers, some after 8:30 p.m., plus many emails. Goldco apologized, said it contacts only numbers provided to it, and removed the number. This lines up with the two text-message class actions described in the next section.
What this means for you. The kit request form we reviewed includes consent to marketing calls, texts, and prerecorded messages. If you want less contact, say so on the first call, ask to be placed on Goldco’s internal do-not-call list, and reply STOP to marketing texts.
Goldco Lawsuits Explained: What the Court Records Show
The short version: No court has found that Goldco defrauded customers. Goldco settled two class actions over marketing text messages, and the case most often referenced online was not filed against Goldco: Goldco was the plaintiff, alleging that a third party was trying to damage the company.
Legal disputes happen in every industry, and Goldco’s are easy to mix up. Here is how the three cases compare, followed by the details of each.
| Case | Court | Who Sued | Issue | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goldco Direct, LLC v. Wilson (filed 2018) | U.S. District Court, N.D. Alabama | Goldco | Alleged scheme to pressure Goldco using confidential customer data and a website attacking the company | Court granted a preliminary and later a permanent injunction; denied the defendant’s motion to dismiss in 2019 |
| Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC (filed 2019) | U.S. District Court, C.D. California | Consumer class | Automated marketing texts to numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry | $1.5 million class settlement fund described in a 2021 court filing |
| Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC (filed 2023) | U.S. District Court, W.D. Wisconsin | Consumer class | Marketing texts sent after people asked Goldco to stop | $2 million settlement; Goldco denied wrongdoing; court approval reported in March 2026 |
What the Wilson Case Was About
The lawsuit, Goldco Direct, LLC v. Warren Wilson, Wholesale Gold Silver IRA, Inc., and Wild West Coins, Inc., grew out of a dispute with a customer, Barbara Clackum. According to the court’s March 2019 opinion, she bought from Goldco in three transactions over about seventeen months, between October 2016 and March 2018, totaling more than $400,000. Within 24 hours of her final purchase of about $159,900, she asked to cancel it. Goldco refunded that order but did not agree to cancel or buy back the two earlier purchases.
Goldco alleged that Ms. Clackum then began working with Warren Wilson, who posed as her nephew under the name “Bruce Clackum.” According to Goldco’s allegations, Mr. Wilson persuaded former Goldco employees to share confidential customer information, contacted Goldco customers directly, and demanded a refund for Ms. Clackum while threatening to send customers a link to a website called “goldcosucks.” These were Goldco’s allegations. The court accepted them as true only for the purpose of deciding whether the Alabama court had jurisdiction over Mr. Wilson.
What the Court Did
- After discovery identified Warren Wilson as the person Goldco had sued under the “Bruce Clackum” name, Goldco amended its complaint to name him
- Mr. Wilson and two of his companies, Wholesale Gold Silver IRA and Wild West Coins, became the defendants
- Goldco voluntarily dismissed its claims against the customer, Barbara Clackum, and the court granted the dismissal
- On March 27, 2019, the court denied Mr. Wilson’s motion to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction and his request to move the case to California
- The court granted a preliminary injunction barring contact with Goldco customers and operation of the website
- A permanent injunction was granted later, according to the court’s 2019 opinion
Some websites report that Goldco won the case and was awarded damages. We could not confirm a final judgment or a damages award in the free public court records available to us, so treat that claim as unverified. The case docket also lists Ms. Clackum as having filed her own claims against Goldco, its CEO Trevor Gerszt, and another individual, and the free records we reviewed do not show how those were resolved.
The takeaway. In this case, Goldco was the plaintiff, defending its customer relationships and reputation through the courts. The lawsuit is not evidence of customer fraud by the company. It is a reminder of something else, though: once a precious metals purchase settles, undoing it is hard, so get every price and term in writing first.
Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC: The $2 Million Text Message Settlement
What was alleged. Jan Summerton filed a class action in 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (Case No. 3:23-cv-00238). She alleged that Goldco sent her more than one marketing text within a 12-month period after she asked it to stop, in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). The settlement class covers people whose numbers were on the National Do Not Call Registry and who received repeat marketing texts from Goldco after opting out, during the four years before the case was filed.
Goldco’s response. Goldco denies all wrongdoing, liability, and damages, and it also disputed that the claims were suitable for class treatment. As the official settlement website puts it, “The Court has not decided who is right.”
Settlement terms. Goldco agreed to a $2,000,000 gross settlement fund. According to the official class notice, the fund covers class counsel’s fees (up to one-third of the fund was requested), notice and administration costs, and a service award of up to $7,500 for the named plaintiff. Class members who filed valid claims by April 10, 2026, share what remains on a pro rata basis. A TCPA-focused legal blog reported about 19,280 class members, or roughly $104 per person before fees and costs.
Status. The final approval hearing was set for March 26, 2026, and the same legal blog reported that the court approved the settlement that day. We were unable to retrieve the approval order itself.
Was Goldco found guilty? No. A settlement is not an admission of liability, and no court ruled on whether Goldco broke the law.
Why it matters to you. The case is about marketing, not about metals pricing or how Goldco handles IRAs. It does show that Goldco markets heavily by text and phone, which matches some BBB complaints. If you request information, expect follow-up, and use the opt-out tools if you want it to stop.
Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC: An Earlier Text Message Case
An earlier TCPA class action, Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC (U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 2:19-cv-06798), alleged that Goldco used a third-party platform to send automated marketing texts to people whose numbers were on the National Do Not Call Registry. Class counsel’s February 2021 fee motion describes a $1.5 million non-reversionary settlement fund and a class of roughly 13,000 people. We could not retrieve the final approval order from free sources.
What We Did Not Find
The BBB lists no government actions against Goldco, and the Business Consumer Alliance says it has no record of government actions. Our search of CFTC enforcement releases and news coverage did not turn up a regulatory enforcement case against Goldco. That is not a guarantee that none exists, so it is worth checking with your state securities regulator or attorney general before you buy, as the CFTC recommends for any metals dealer.
Goldco Buyback Program: What the “Highest Price” Guarantee Actually Covers
The short version: Goldco will offer to buy back what it sold you at any time, but its highest-price guarantee only applies after three years, and no specific buyback price is promised. Plan on holding for several years, and get today’s buyback bid in writing when you buy.
Goldco says it will buy back metals purchased from Goldco at any time, and it advertises a Highest BuyBack Guarantee. The fine print is narrower than the headline. According to the footnotes on Goldco’s website, the highest-price guarantee applies only after three years from your initial purchase, and “No specific buy back rates guaranteed.” There is no published formula for what Goldco will pay, and the details are in the customer agreement you sign.
What Goldco’s buyback terms say, in plain English:
Goldco will offer to buy back metals it sold you, at any time. The “highest price” part of the guarantee starts three years after your first purchase, and Goldco does not promise any particular buyback rate.
For retirees, liquidity matters more than people expect. A promise to buy is not a promise about price.
A Buyback Offer Is Not a Guarantee You Get Your Money Back
This is the distinction that trips people up. A dealer can honor its buyback promise in full and you can still lose money. Here is why:
- Spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of the raw metal.
- Your purchase price is spot plus the dealer’s premium.
- The buyback bid is what the dealer will pay you. For common bullion it is usually close to spot. For fractional or limited-edition coins, it may sit much closer to melt value than to what you paid.
- The spread is the difference between the price you pay and the price you would be paid back on the same day. The metal price has to rise by at least that much before a sale breaks even.
Hypothetical example. Say you buy coins for $50,000 that contain $40,000 worth of metal at today’s spot price, which is a 25% premium. If Goldco later offers to buy them back at spot and the metal price has not moved, you would receive about $40,000. The buyback worked exactly as promised, and you are still down $10,000 plus account fees. Metal prices would need to rise 25% just to break even. The premium table in the fees section shows how this scales.
Timing and Practical Costs of Selling
Selling from an IRA is slower than selling a stock. Goldco has to agree on a price, the custodian has to authorize the sale, and the depository has to release the metal before cash settles in your IRA. Goldco has attributed slow sales to the physical process of retrieving and verifying metal, and several 2026 BBB complaints describe liquidations that took weeks or months. Goldco advertises no fees on liquidation. If you then withdraw the cash from a traditional IRA, the withdrawal is taxable and may face a 10% additional tax before age 59½.
Questions to Ask About the Buyback, in Writing
- What would you bid today, per ounce, for each product on my order?
- How does that compare with your selling price for the same product today?
- Which products does the highest-price guarantee cover, and how is “highest price” determined?
- What happens if I want to sell before the three-year mark?
- How long does a typical IRA liquidation take, from my call to cash in my IRA?
- Are there any fees on liquidation from Goldco, the custodian, or the depository?
If you expect to hold for three years or more, ask a specialist to put today’s buyback bid for each product next to its purchase price in your written quote. That one comparison shows you the spread before you commit. Talk to a Goldco Specialist About Your Rollover
Calling Goldco: What to Expect on Your First Call

Goldco does not offer a fully online checkout for IRAs. Opening an account means talking with a representative, so the first call shapes everything after it. These are the things first-time callers commonly worry about:
- A scripted sales pitch instead of real answers.
- Pressure to decide on the first call.
- Big promises, like someone jumping straight into “gold is going to the moon.”
Public reviews suggest most callers have a good experience. Goldco’s Trustpilot profile shows 89% five-star reviews, and many reviewers describe patient, knowledgeable representatives. The minority of negative reviews describe the opposite: feeling pressured, unclear promotional terms, and trouble reaching reps later on.
The coin pictured above, a Chuck Norris limited-edition silver coin, is a good example of what to watch for. Themed coins can be appealing, but ask what one costs per ounce of silver compared with a standard American Silver Eagle before you buy it.
Use the call to test the rep, not the other way around:
When you ask about fees, a good rep should name the custodian and send you its fee schedule. When you ask about storage, they should tell you which depository and whether storage is segregated. When you ask for the premium on each product, they should give you a number and agree to send it by email. If you go quiet for a few seconds, they should not rush to fill the silence with pressure.
A useful benchmark: if the answers you get on the phone are not ones the company will put in writing, treat them as sales talk.
That standard matters when retirement money is on the line.
Goldco Rollover Process: Step by Step
Already know how rollovers work? The Goldco-specific points are short: Goldco coordinates the paperwork with your custodian, the transfer step usually takes from a couple of days to two weeks, and a direct transfer avoids tax withholding. You can skip ahead to what Goldco sells or the free silver terms.
This walkthrough reflects Goldco’s published process and IRS rollover rules for what happens when you set up a gold IRA with Goldco. Plan on a few weeks from the first form to the vault confirmation. Goldco says the transfer step alone can take from a couple of days to two weeks, and that delays usually come from the old account’s administrator verifying the request.
Step 1: Open Your Self Directed IRA
After you speak with a representative, Goldco helps you open a self-directed IRA with a custodian. Goldco’s website does not name its custodian partners. The custodians most often reported for Goldco accounts are Equity Trust Company or STRATA Trust Company, so ask which one you will be assigned and request its fee schedule. The custodian handles the administrative and IRS reporting side. You will typically:
- Fill out the new account form
- Submit basic identification
- Confirm your contact details
- Provide information on any old retirement plans you plan to transfer
Most paperwork can be signed electronically. Ask how long the custodian’s approval usually takes. If you are unsure whether you want a Traditional or Roth gold IRA, your specialist can explain both, though the choice usually follows the type of account you are moving:
- Traditional IRA. Usually pre-tax money. Withdrawals are taxed as income, and required minimum distributions start at age 73 or 75 depending on your birth year: 73 if you were born from 1951 through 1959, and 75 if you were born in 1960 or later (see current IRS guidance and the IRS’s 2024 RMD regulations).
- Roth IRA. After-tax money. Qualified withdrawals are tax-free, and the original owner does not have to take required minimum distributions.
Step 2: Transfer or Roll Over Your Retirement Funds
This is the part most beginners worry about. Goldco’s team typically coordinates with your old custodian or plan administrator, so you are not chasing emails yourself. What matters most is how the money moves.
Ways You Can Fund Your Account
| Method | Timeline | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Transfer | Often one to two weeks | Existing IRAs | Moves trustee to trustee, so there is no tax withholding and it does not count toward the one-rollover-per-year limit |
| 401k Rollover | Often two to three weeks | Old employer plans | Ask for a direct rollover. If the check is made out to you, the plan must withhold 20%, and you have 60 days to deposit the full amount |
| Cash Contribution | A few business days | Adding fresh money | The 2026 IRA limit is $7,500, plus a $1,100 catch-up if you are 50 or older |
Sources: IRS rollover rules and IRS 2026 contribution limits.
Accounts That Can Be Rolled Over
| Account Type | Eligible | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional IRA | Yes | Most common transfer into a gold IRA |
| Roth IRA | Yes | Must go into a Roth gold IRA; a Roth IRA cannot be moved into a traditional IRA |
| 401k from a previous employer | Yes | Usually the easiest rollover |
| 401k from a current employer | Sometimes | Depends on employer plan rules; many plans allow in-service rollovers only after age 59½ |
| 403b | Yes | Works similarly to a 401k |
| TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) | Yes | Common for federal employees and veterans; available after you leave federal service or through an age-based withdrawal at 59½ while still working |
| 457 Plan | Governmental plans: Yes | Governmental 457(b) plans can roll into an IRA. 457(b) plans run by tax-exempt employers cannot |
Your Goldco specialist opens a self directed IRA, coordinates with your old plan, and keeps things moving. A few IRS rules are worth knowing:
- If you receive the money yourself (an indirect rollover), you must deposit it in the new IRA within 60 days, or it becomes taxable and may face a 10% additional tax if you are under 59½
- You cannot roll over required minimum distributions
- Annual contribution limits still apply if you add fresh money
- You can make only one IRA-to-IRA indirect rollover in any 12-month period across all your IRAs; direct trustee-to-trustee transfers do not count
- Most customers choose the direct transfer because it is the cleanest option
Step 3: Choose Your Precious Metals
For IRAs, Goldco sells products it lists as IRA eligible, which keeps you away from collectibles that could cause trouble later. Under the tax code, an IRA that buys collectibles is treated as making a distribution. The exceptions are certain coins and highly refined bullion held by the IRA’s trustee.
IRS Purity Requirements: The law ties bullion eligibility to the minimum fineness required for delivery under regulated futures contracts. In practice that generally means 99.5% for gold and 99.9% for silver. American Gold Eagles are a specific exception: they are 91.67% gold, but the statute allows them. Sources: IRS IRA FAQs and 26 U.S.C. 408(m).
Standard choices include the American Gold Eagle, American Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leaf, and gold bars. Goldco also carries a large lineup of themed quarter-ounce coins, lunar series, and limited mintages. For most retirement savers, standard coins and bars are the simpler core holding because they are easier to price and resell. “IRA eligible” means a coin is allowed in the account. It says nothing about whether its premium is reasonable.
Step 4: Metals Delivered to an Approved Depository
Once you approve your selection, the custodian completes the purchase, the metals ship to the depository, and you receive a confirmation. That confirmation is one of the most reassuring moments in the process because it lists the exact holdings tied to your account. Check that the products and quantities match your order.
Storage Options

- Segregated storage. Your metals are kept physically apart from other customers’ holdings, and you get back the exact items you deposited.
- Non segregated storage. Also called commingled storage. Your holdings are allocated to your account by product and quantity but stored alongside identical products owned by others. When you withdraw, you get the same products, not necessarily the same physical coins or bars.
Step 5: Monitor and Stay in Control
Once your metals are stored, you can:
- View your holdings through your custodian’s portal and statements
- Request buy or sell orders through Goldco and your custodian
- Receive regular custodian statements and IRS tax forms
- Take distributions after age 59½ without the 10% additional tax (traditional IRA withdrawals are still taxed as income)
- Request physical delivery of the metal as an in-kind distribution, which is taxed like a cash withdrawal at the metal’s fair market value
Goldco Customer Support
Customer support is one of Goldco’s selling points, and its review scores largely back that up. Money named Goldco “Best Customer Service” in its 2023 gold IRA rankings, according to Goldco’s announcement. Goldco is not among the picks in Money’s September 2026 roundup, so treat the award as past recognition rather than a current ranking.
How Their Support Works
- Dedicated representative from day one. Goldco assigns a rep who learns your situation and handles your setup.
- Personalized guidance. Your rep reviews your balance, goals, and timeline before recommending products, so be clear about yours.
- Fast answers. This is where complaints cluster. Several 2026 BBB complaints and Trustpilot reviews describe slow callbacks, especially when customers want to sell.
- Beginner friendly tone. Many reviewers who were new to rollovers say the process was explained clearly.
- Steady through the whole process. Ask for your rep’s direct contact information and for the separate customer care line Goldco lists for existing customers.
Ways You Can Reach Them
| Method | Best Used For | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Account setup, pricing questions, and buyback quotes | Goldco lists separate phone lines for new business and customer care on its website |
| Getting prices, terms, and explanations in writing | Ask your rep to confirm every quote by email | |
| Live Chat | Quick general questions | Check availability on Goldco’s site; we did not confirm live chat for this update |
| Call Back Request | Busy periods | Some reviewers report slow callbacks, so follow up in writing if you do not hear back |
Goldco Storage and Security
The short version: Goldco never holds your IRA metals. A custodian holds the account, and a third-party depository such as Delaware Depository stores and insures the metal. Segregated storage costs about $50 more a year than commingled storage.
Goldco does not store IRA metals itself. Your custodian holds the account and uses a third-party depository. Goldco’s storage guide names Delaware Depository as one of the depositories it works with. Brink’s Global Services is another widely used precious metals depository. Which vault you can use depends on your custodian, so confirm it before you fund the account.
Goldco Vault Comparison
| Feature | Delaware Depository | Brink’s Global Services |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Wilmington, Delaware and Boulder City, Nevada | Multiple locations across the US and worldwide; confirm the specific facility |
| Security Level | High-security vaults; says it is an SSAE 18 SOC 1 Type 1 audited organization | High-security vaults used by banks and large institutions |
| Insurance | Says it is insured through Lloyd’s of London, with $1 billion in all-risk coverage and exclusions for events such as war and cyberattacks | Insured; ask your custodian for the policy details |
| Storage Types | Segregated and non segregated (commingled) | Segregated and non segregated; confirm with your custodian |
| Reputation | Says most IRA custodians use it (a company claim) | Global security brand with a long history of handling high-value assets |
| Best For | People who want the depository most commonly used for IRAs | People who prefer a global security name behind their metals |
Delaware Depository details come from its FAQ and IRA services page.
Storage Options and Pricing

| Storage Type | Yearly Cost | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Segregated | About $150 | Your metals are kept apart from other customers’ holdings, and you get back the exact items you deposited. |
| Non Segregated | About $100 | Your holdings are allocated to you by product and quantity and stored with identical products owned by others. Same depository insurance; you get back like-kind items. |
Both options carry the depository’s insurance. The real difference is whether you get back the exact coins and bars you bought. Choose segregated if that matters to you, which it can for proof or limited-edition coins. Choose non segregated if you hold standard bullion and want to save about $50 a year. These storage figures come from Goldco’s fee estimate, and your custodian’s fee schedule is the final word.
Insurance and Audits
With any gold IRA company, the question is how the metals are protected once they reach the vault. Delaware Depository says it is insured through Lloyd’s of London and publishes $1 billion in all-risk coverage plus additional contingent coverage, with exclusions for events such as war, terrorism, and cyberattacks. IRA storage fees typically include the depository’s insurance, but confirm that on your custodian’s fee schedule.
Your custodian sends regular account statements. Delaware Depository says it is an SSAE 18 SOC 1 Type 1 audited organization. Ask your custodian how often holdings are reconciled with the depository, and compare each statement with your order. The CFTC also recommends checking that your holdings match your statements.
Goldco Products: What’s Actually in the Catalog

The short version: Goldco sells gold and silver only. Its catalog includes standard 1 oz bullion coins and bars, but most of its gold listings are quarter-ounce specialty coins, which usually cost more per ounce. Ask for standard bullion by name if low premiums are your priority.
When we reviewed Goldco’s online catalog on October 21, 2026, it listed 25 gold products and 49 silver products, with no platinum or palladium. The mix matters. Twenty of the 25 gold products were quarter-ounce coins, most of them themed or limited-edition designs from mints such as the Perth Mint, New Zealand Mint, Royal Dutch Mint, and Royal Mint. The other five were the 1 oz American Gold Eagle, its proof version, the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo, the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, and gold bars.
Quarter-ounce coins are not bad products, but they usually cost more per ounce than 1 oz coins or bars, and that premium is what many complaints are about. If you want low-premium bullion, ask for 1 oz coins or bars by name.
Gold IRA Eligible
- American Gold Eagle (and Proof)
- American Buffalo
- Canadian Maple Leaf
- Australian Striped Marlin (quarter-ounce)
- British Lunar Series (quarter-ounce)
- Gold bars
- Other themed quarter-ounce coins from government and private mints
Silver IRA Eligible
- American Silver Eagle (and Proof)
- Silver Maple Leaf
- Silver Britannia, including the Lunar Series
- Australian Striped Marlin
- Australian Sea Turtle
- Silver bars
- Many specialty and commemorative silver coins (Goldco marked 47 of its 49 silver listings as IRA eligible)
Not IRA Eligible
- Chuck Norris silver coin (Goldco’s catalog does not state its IRA eligibility, so ask before buying it for an IRA)
- Silver Veteran coin (the one product Goldco’s catalog marked as not IRA eligible)
- Non IRA collectibles, such as rare or graded numismatic coins
A commemorative design does not by itself disqualify a coin. Goldco’s catalog marks its World War II Victory, First Moon Landing, and Britannia Lunar silver coins as IRA eligible because they meet the fineness rules.
The selection avoids rare graded coins, which is a plus. But a catalog built mostly around themed fractional coins puts the burden on you to steer your order toward standard bullion if low premiums are your priority.

Goldco Direct: Buying Gold Outside an IRA
If you want gold sent directly to your home, you do not need an IRA, a custodian, or storage, and IRA rules do not apply. Goldco says it can ship metals bought with cash either to an independent insured depository or directly to you.
Before you order, ask how the package will be insured in transit, whether a signature is required, and whether the packaging is discreet. The tax treatment is also different outside an IRA: the IRS taxes long-term gains on collectibles, including coins, at a maximum 28% rate.

Goldco’s Free Silver Promotion: What the Fine Print Says

The short version: The bonus is real but conditional. It applies only to qualified orders of $50,000 or more in Goldco premium coins, and it only helps if those coins’ extra premium is smaller than the bonus. Run the comparison below with your own written quote.
Like many companies in the precious metals space, Goldco offers incentives for new clients. Its best-known offer is bonus silver on large orders. The terms are narrower than the up-to-10% headline suggests.
How the Promotion Works
- Applies to qualified orders of Goldco premium coins, not to every purchase or every deposit
- Up to 5% back in silver on $50,000 to $99,999 of premium-coin purchases
- 10% on $100,000 or more of premium-coin purchases
- Cannot be combined with other offers, additional rules may apply, and your customer agreement controls
Source: the promotion footnotes on Goldco’s website, checked October 21, 2026. Goldco does not define which products count as premium coins, so ask your rep for the list.
Example. If you put $100,000 into Goldco premium coins in your gold IRA, you could receive up to $10,000 in silver. If you put the same $100,000 into standard bullion such as 1 oz Eagles or bars, the offer may not apply at all. Ask whether your exact order qualifies before you approve it.
Is the Bonus Worth It? A Hypothetical Comparison
A bonus only helps if it outweighs the extra premium on the coins that qualify for it. Goldco does not publish premium-coin pricing, so the comparison below uses hypothetical premiums for a $100,000 purchase. It assumes the $10,000 of bonus silver is valued at a retail price 20% above its melt value.
| Option | Assumed Premium Over Melt Value | Melt Value of Coins | Melt Value of Bonus Silver | Total Melt Value You Own |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 oz bullion, no bonus | 6% | $94,340 | $0 | $94,340 |
| Premium coins plus 10% bonus | 10% | $90,909 | $8,333 | $99,242 |
| Premium coins plus 10% bonus | 16% | $86,207 | $8,333 | $94,540 |
| Premium coins plus 10% bonus | 25% | $80,000 | $8,333 | $88,333 |
| Premium coins plus 10% bonus | 40% | $71,429 | $8,333 | $79,762 |
In this example, the bonus comes out ahead only if the premium coins cost no more than about 16% over melt value, roughly 10 percentage points above the bullion option. Above that, you end up owning less metal despite the free silver. The only way to know where your order falls is to get the premium on each coin in writing and compare it with a quote for 1 oz bullion.
Promotions should not be the only reason to pick a company. If you were already planning a large purchase, the bonus can add real value, but only after you check the math above. Ask whether the bonus silver goes into your IRA or ships to you, how it will be reported for tax purposes, and get the bonus terms in your customer agreement before you fund.
Planning a purchase of $50,000 or more? Ask a specialist which coins qualify for the current bonus and what premium each one carries, so you can run the comparison above with real numbers:

|---|---|
| Founder | Trevor Gerszt |
| Role | Founder and CEO, per Goldco’s BBB profile, which also lists JD Koehler as President and Jennifer Stearns as General Counsel |
| Background | A Stevie Awards company profile describes him as the founder; a San Fernando Valley Business Journal profile from around 2015 reported that he acquired Goldco in 2010 |
| Founded | 2006, according to Goldco (BBB lists the current business entity as started in 2011) |
| Location | Calabasas, California |
Goldco says it was founded by Trevor Gerszt, and the BBB lists him as Founder and CEO. Published accounts of the company’s early years differ: a Stevie Awards company profile gives a 2006 founding date, while a San Fernando Valley Business Journal profile said Gerszt acquired the company in 2010. Founder-led continuity can be a plus for consistency, but it is no substitute for reading the terms you sign.
Goldco’s Ambassadors: What They Mean and Do Not Mean

Goldco works with several familiar names. Its website currently features Sean Hannity, Donald Trump Jr., Lara Trump, Tom Selleck, and Dennis Quaid, and Goldco has also announced a partnership with Chuck Norris. The ambassador approach is common in this industry. Augusta has used Joe Montana. American Hartford Gold has used Bill O’Reilly and Rick Harrison. Most big players use public figures to build recognition.
What it tells you. Goldco has the scale and budget to run campaigns at this level.
What it does not tell you. These ambassadors did not review pricing, coins, or fees. They are paid spokespeople. Treat their presence as a sign of visibility, not proof of quality. The real judgment comes from fees, service, and the terms a company will put in writing.
Goldco vs Competitors
The short version: Goldco’s main edge is its $25,000 entry point paired with a rep-led rollover. Augusta suits larger rollovers that want an education-first process, while American Hartford Gold and Birch Gold Group accept smaller starting amounts.
Is Goldco “the best”? It depends on who you compare it to and what you need. Here is how Goldco stacks up against the three names it gets compared to most often, using each company’s published figures as of October 2026.

Questions to Ask Goldco in Writing Before You Fund the Account
Every question below is one you can ask any gold IRA company. The goal is simple: get each answer by email, not just on the phone.
- What is today’s spot price, and what is my price per ounce for each product on this order?
- What is the percentage premium over spot for each product?
- What would you bid today to buy each product back?
- Which custodian will hold my IRA, and can you send its current fee schedule?
- Which depository will store my metals, and is the storage segregated or commingled?
- Does my order qualify for bonus silver, which coins does that require, and where will the bonus silver be held?
- What are the steps, time frame, and costs to sell my metals back to you, including before the three-year mark?
- Are you a licensed financial adviser or fiduciary? (Goldco states that it is not.)
- How do I opt out of marketing calls and texts?

Goldco Review FAQs
Is Goldco a scam or legit?
Goldco is a legitimate company. It is BBB accredited with an A+ rating, has operated for well over a decade, and has strong scores on independent review platforms. That does not make every purchase a good deal: the BBB lists 72 complaints in three years, many of them about pricing, statement values, and liquidation delays, and Goldco has settled two class actions over marketing texts without a finding of wrongdoing.
What is the Goldco minimum investment?
Goldco generally requires $25,000 for a gold IRA. It does not publish a minimum for cash purchases with home delivery; third-party reviews commonly cite about $10,000, so confirm before you call.
Does Goldco store metals themselves?
No. IRA metals are held by your custodian at a third-party depository. Goldco names Delaware Depository as one of its storage partners, and other depositories such as Brink’s may be available depending on your custodian.
Can I store gold IRA metals at home?
No. The IRS says IRA bullion must be in the physical possession of a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee, and holding it yourself is treated as a distribution. Metals bought with cash outside an IRA can be shipped to you.
How does Goldco make money?
Through the price of the coins and bars it sells, which includes a premium over the metal’s melt value. Admin and storage fees go to the custodian and vault, not to Goldco.
Is the Goldco buyback trustworthy?
Goldco publishes a commitment to buy back metals it sold at any time, and its highest-price guarantee applies after three years. It does not guarantee a specific buyback rate, and some 2026 BBB complaints describe slow liquidations. We did not test a buyback for this update, so ask for a written bid on your exact products before you buy.
What fees should I expect with a Goldco IRA?
Goldco estimates $275 to $325 in the first year and about $225 to $275 per year after that. Those fees go to the custodian and storage partner, not to Goldco. The larger cost is the premium you pay over melt value, which Goldco quotes by phone.
Has Goldco been sued?
Yes. Goldco settled two class actions over marketing text messages: Judson v. Goldco Direct, LLC ($1.5 million fund) and Summerton v. Goldco Direct LLC ($2 million fund, in which Goldco denied wrongdoing). In the case most often referenced online, Goldco Direct, LLC v. Warren Wilson, Goldco was the party filing the lawsuit, and the court granted it preliminary and permanent injunctions.
Does the free silver offer apply to every Goldco IRA?
No. Goldco’s fine print limits it to qualified orders of $50,000 or more in Goldco premium coins: up to 5% for $50,000 to $99,999 and 10% for $100,000 or more. Standard bullion orders may not qualify.
Why does my Goldco account statement show less than I paid?
Custodian statements typically value your holdings at the current spot price of the metal, not the price you paid. The gap is mostly the dealer premium. Goldco gives this explanation in its responses to BBB complaints, which is why it pays to know your premium before you buy.
Final Verdict: Is Goldco Worth It?
After reviewing Goldco’s published terms, complaint record, and court history, here is our conclusion.
Goldco is a legitimate, established choice for people rolling over $25,000 or more who want hands-on help, as long as they stay in control of what they buy.
Not perfect. Not the cheapest. Its strengths are real: a moderate minimum, published fee estimates, strong review scores, and a guided rollover that many first-time buyers appreciate. So are its trade-offs: premiums it does not publish, a catalog weighted toward quarter-ounce specialty coins, a highest-price buyback guarantee that starts only after three years, a free silver offer tied to premium coins, and a complaint file centered on statement values and slow liquidations.
Suitability Checklist
Goldco is likely a good fit if you can say yes to most of these:
- I am moving $25,000 or more from an IRA, 401(k), TSP, or 403(b).
- I want a representative to coordinate the custodian and transfer paperwork.
- I can leave this money in metals for at least three years.
- I do not need this portion of my savings for near-term expenses.
- I will ask for the premium and buyback bid on every product in writing.
- I am comfortable steering the order toward standard bullion if premiums on specialty coins are high.
If you answered no to the first, third, or fourth item, or you want the lowest possible premium with the least sales contact, a lower-minimum provider or a different part of your portfolio may serve you better.
Before you sign anything, compare written prices. Put Goldco’s per-product quote next to at least one other company’s quote for the same metals. The lower premium on comparable products leaves more of your rollover in actual metal, and that matters far more than any annual fee or bonus.
If the checklist describes you, the next step costs nothing. Request the kit, take the call, and get the numbers in writing.
